Open Edition: Artist talks and installation previews with Ciara Phillips and Étienne Tremblay-Tardif

In a series of talks, the artists of Open Edition reflect on their work through the exhibition’s theme of looking back and looking forward. In the first iteration, Ciara Phillips and Étienne Tremblay-Tardif will give a behind-the-scenes preview of their installations and address printmaking’s relationship to labour and activism, their range of sources, and how they create an immersive space in the gallery.

Born in Ottawa, and currently based in Glasgow, Ciara Phillips works in printmaking and often transforms her exhibition spaces into workshops, inviting community groups and members of the public to collaborate with her. Her practice explores the collaborative nature of art production and the communities of interest that give rise to the creation and dissemination of art and ideas. Phillips received her BFA from Queens University, Kingston, ON and her MFA from the Glasgow School of Art. She was nominated for the 2014 Turner Prize, and has exhibited extensively internationally. Recent Canadian exhibitions include the Agnes Etherington Art Centre (Kingston) and Western Front (Vancouver) in 2016.

Born in Isle-aux-Coudres, Étienne Tremblay-Tardif is based in Montréal. He completed a BA in Film Studies and Art History at the Université de Montréal (2006), as well as a BFA (2009) and MFA (2013) in Studio Art at Concordia University. His interests include complexity and density in urban social space, multiples and artist’s books, cinéma direct, the history of architecture, critical theory and visual culture. He recently presented his projects at Occurrence, AXENÉO7, Arprim, and at the International Symposium of Contemporary Art, Baie-Saint-Paul.

Admission is free and everyone is welcome! CUAG is an accessible space, with barrier-free washrooms and elevator.
