On June 24th, the Eritrean Youth Initiative (EYI), a local non-profit organization, will host a charity fundraiser event. Our mission is to empower young Eritrean-Canadian youth through higher education. We firmly believe in the power of education in building leaders capable of making positive change. During the gala, we will award a young Eritrean-Canadian youth who will be attending university starting fall 2017 with the EYI Scholarship for Courage, Leadership and Excellence. This year, we are giving the scholarship in memory of Abraha Haile Kidane, recognising his dedication to higher education and his family's contribution to the scholarship.
June is National Blind-Deaf Awareness month. To celebrate Canadian values of inclusiveness, accommodation and diversity, we are bringing Haben Girma as a keynote speaker for our event. Haben is an Eritrean-American who has earned recognition as a White House Champion of Change, Forbes 30 under 30, and BBC Women of Africa Hero. The first deafblind person to graduate from Harvard Law School, Haben advocates for equal access to information for people with disabilities. Because of her global disability rights advocacy, she has been honored by President Barack Obama and President Bill Clinton (Clinton Foundation). Her full bio can be found here: habengirma.com.
We will also have other amazing guest speakers, including the former Advisor to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and one of Canada’s 20 under 20.
Interested in buying a corporate table? We are offering corporations to buy a table at the dinner. Those who get corporate table will be provided the photo opportunities with Haben, and EYI will advertise the corporation’s logo throughout the event.
