Shenkman Arts Centre / Centre des Arts Shenkman
245 boul. Centrum Boulevard, Ottawa, Ontario K1E 0A1
Developed by the Gharana Arts Organization, this festival is based on the idea of exploring the universal concept of rhythm and its particular manifestations. It is a festival that seeks to give back to the community while highlighting the immense talent it has to offer. The program will consist of various local groups of diverse cultures along with Gharana Arts’ own uniquely adapted production of ‘SLEEPING BEAUTY’. In presenting a range of items, we seek to create an immersive experience of rhythmic exploration.
This festival has three main objectives:
* YOUTH ENGAGEMENT – educating young people to foster an appreciation for music and dance
* CROSS CULTURAL PERFORMANCE – showcasing rhythm and dance traditions from around the world
*SUPPORT LOCAL ARTISTS – featuring local groups with diverse backgrounds to create a unique network pool of artists in Ottawa
Headlining the festival, is a spectacular world premiere of ‘SLEEPING BEAUTY’. This Kathak dance adaptation brings together the storytelling traditions of two distinct classical artistic styles. It is journey where Eastern art form interprets a Western story culminating in a truly cross-cultural Canadian concept. Making it even more celebratory with the 150th anniversary of Canada. All music and choreography has been originally composed by Gharana Arts, this is a rare opportunity to experience true contemporary innovation without losing sight of tradition in current trends. This is a family event for children of all ages.
The Gharana Arts Organization
Founded by Ravi S. K. Singh and Kasturi Mishra, Gharana Arts strives to support the education and development of youth in the Ottawa community and perseveres to spread the practice of Indian Classical Arts to a new generation of Canadians. As well as offering classes in the classical traditions of Kathak (dance) and Tabla (percussion), the school is also the only North American institution accredited by the Prayag Sageet Samiti, and allowed to host examinations and certifications for its students. The organization equally strives to promote cultural and artistic growth in the community at large.
