A few months ago Chris Cornell passed away. A few days later, we found out the circumstances of his passing. For the following couple of weeks, the outpouring of grief and sadness, posts about suicide, suicide prevention, posts of his music and tributes to him struck me and got me thinking.

When musicians pass away, their deaths don't hit us hard because we feel like we know them — they hit us hard because they help us know ourselves. For many of us, Chris Cornell's was the voice of our formative years, of our generation… and I think it will remain so, for a long time to come.

I've decided to ask around and have gathered a group of local musicians to play a tribute concert in his name and honour, and to help those who need someone to talk to, those of us who need help because they feel like the weight of the world is on their shoulders, those who we want to stick around because we love and need them, because life is totally worth it. We all have someone we wish was still here with us. So far, the support I've received has been pretty overwhelming.

As an esteemed friend of mine wrote when a friend passed away:

'If anybody you know is going through hard times in their lives, reach out to them. Don't let them feel like they have to take on the world by themselves. Spread love like fire and light a torch for everybody that may be stuck in the darkness.'

Musicians participating in this event and covering songs by Chris Cornell are members of:

The Red Rails, A Darker Day, Defined, Black Oak Decline, Merdarahta, Rydell, Old Rules, Wild Love, The Wicked Mercy and Stuart Hoopfer, with visuals by Hard Science.

Any extra donations will be appreciated and 100% of this show's proceeds will go to the Ottawa Distress Centre to help train volunteers with SAFEtalk and ASIST applied suicide intervention training, so they can help anyone with suicidal ideation and help prevent suicide attempts.

Bands will be playing in the following order:

James Reid and co. — Rydell, Old Rules, Wild Love
Seb Choquette and Serge Cote — Merdarahta
Jon Rioux and co. — A Darker Day, Defined, Black Oak Decline
Stuart Hoopfer (solo)
Kim Vincent and co. — Red Rails, Wicked Mercy
Kim Vincent (solo)

Come early — this show is gonna be packed!
