POSTPONED: We regret to inform you that, due to inclement weather in the United States, our guest speaker is unable to travel to Ottawa for Thursday March 22. This lecture has been rescheduled for Thursday April 5, 2018.

Join Emily Braun, Distinguished Professor at Hunter College and the Graduate Center, CUNY, as she talks about Gustav Klimt’s Portrait of Elisabeth Lederer.

Free admission.

Commissioned by Serena Lederer – Elisabeth’s mother and Klimt’s most important patron – this painting bears witness to the tragic fate of the Lederer family and its collection under Hitler’s regime. Yet, it is also a vibrant portrait of Klimt’s passion for East Asian art and an homage to the worldly eye of his patron.

Emily Braun is a specialist of late 19th and 20th century art and visual culture. Braun has published widely on Cubism, Italian modernism, and American art. Her most recent essay, on Grant Wood and Magic Realism, will appear in the catalogue of the Whitney Museum’s forthcoming retrospective on the artist. Among her award-winning exhibitions are Alberto Burri: The Trauma of Painting (Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, 2015) and The Power of Conversation: Jewish Women and their Salons (The Jewish Museum, New York, 2005). As an expert on Gustav Klimt, she has contributed to catalogues on the artist published by the National Gallery of Canada and the Neue Galerie, New York.
