Join us at the Canada Agriculture and Food Museum to celebrate all things spring – during our annual Barnyard Break! Take in an array of animal and kitchen demonstrations, discover how maple syrup is made, and taste maple taffy on snow. Young visitors can participate in the children’s story time and get creative with a craft.

Don’t miss demonstrations from special guests throughout our Barnyard Break! See a daytime cooking demonstration with Chef Cezin Nottaway, an appearance by Ottawa RedBlacks mascot Big Joe, a lumberjack demonstration from the McGill University Woodsmen Team, an interactive performance exploring the history of Canada’s lumberjacks, and a wooden spoons workshop offered by storyteller Louis Mercier.

Cooking with Maple Syrup, Daily: 9:30 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.
Did you know Canada produces 85 per cent of the world’s maple syrup? Join us in the kitchen to help prepare delicious treats while you learn some interesting facts about maple syrup.

Maple Taffy on the Snow, Daily: 11:30 a.m.
There are very few things that mark this time of year quite as sweetly as maple taffy! Join us to discover the process of turning maple sap into taffy, taste a sample, and see a display of maple sugaring equipment and historical photos.

Craft, Daily: 9:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
Children are invited to listen to a seasonal story and make a spring-themed craft to take home.

A Pie Party, Daily: 10:15 a.m., 1:15 p.m. and 3:15 p.m.
Take part in making some of Canada’s favourite pies! Join us to learn about the history of pies and discover regional pies from across the country. Whether it’s with a flakey pastry or buttery crumb crust, there’s a slice for everyone!

Algonquin Cuisine Workshop, Saturday, March 3 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Chef Cezin Nottaway from Wawatay Catering presents a workshop featuring Algonquin cuisine. The workshop will be in English only with a bilingual Q & A. Chef bio: Cezin is an Algonquin born and raised in Rapid Lake, QC. She currently resides in Kitigan Zibi with her family. She is the chef and owner of Wawatay Catering, which specializes in traditional and modern Algonquin cuisine.

Plaid Day and McGill University Woodsmen Team Demonstration, Saturday, March 10 at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
Want to see wood chips fly? Watch as lumberjacks and jills demonstrate traditional woodsmen activities! This outdoor demonstration showcases Canada’s rich history in forestry as celebrated by a whole new generation of lumberjacks.

Visit with Big Joe, Saturday, March 10 (morning only)
Big Joe – the Ottawa RedBlacks team mascot – will make a special appearance during Plaid Day…get your camera ready!

Canadian Traditions: Play the Wooden Spoons Workshop (bilingual), Saturday, March 17 from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
In this fun and interactive workshop, participants will sand and finish a set of their own wooden spoons and then learn to play simple tunes with their instrument. Ages 4 and up (participating children must be accompanied by an adult). Reservation required: $5 fee (does not include museum admission)

Canadian Traditions: Songs and Stories of Loggers & Lumberjacks (bilingual), Saturday, March 17 from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Hear the stories, sing the songs of the lumberjacks, and meet logger Ti-Pic Ladrave in this interactive performance that explores Canada’s rich history of logging, from the nineteenth century to current day.

Pancake Sundays, March 4, 11, and 18 from 10 a.m. to noon
Enjoy delicious classic pancakes served with maple syrup.
